His second quest for Soul Edge takes place in the events of SoulCalibur, as he is disgraced for having led his squad into a devastating trap due to being distracted in concern for Seong Mi-na, the daughter of Seong Han-myeong. His search for the weapon would not last, however, as he is forced to return home to defend his homeland. As rumors swirled regarding the Sword of Salavation known as Soul Edge, Hwang is sent to hunt for the weapon. Fueled by the justice and honor instilled in him by his parents, Hwang volunteered into the Korean Coast Guard in an effort to defend against the invading Japanese forces. In Hwang's debut, he was the prize student of Seong Han-myeong, a Korean swordmaster to whom Hwang had enrolled after the death of his parents. Hwang's moveset would be made wholly unique in SoulCalibur, where he and Mitsurugi would receive completely modified movesets. Once the game moved to consoles under the name SoulBlade, Hwang received a somewhat modified moveset in an effort to make him more unique to separate him from his counterpart. ![]() ![]() He started out as a stylistic clone of Mitsurugi as well as a replacement for Mitsurugi's character in the Korean build of the game. Hwang Seong-gyeong's debut came in SoulEdge, the first game in the franchise. SoulCalibur 6 brings the style's originator back into the fold. Hong Yun-seong takes his place on the main roster from SC2 through to SC4, using a variant of Hwang's style with his own flair. The following game introduced the Create-A-Soul feature with a library of unique weapons for the player to use, Hwang's weapon being among them, along with a special character outfitted to look just like him before graduating to a semi-unique status in the Arcade version of the title. Season 2 would follow suit, bringing Hilde into the fray along with Setsuka much sooner than their proper series introductions in SC4 and 3 respectively. The first Season Pass brought Tira, Amy, and Cassandra back into the fold, introducing them to the timeline of events earlier than the previous canon, before the timeline reboot introduced in SC6 that set the series back to the era of SoulCalibur 1. Bandai-Namco has used the DLC in SoulCalibur 6 to fill in holes in the roster left by fan-favorite characters being absent in the base game.
